Carol Ann Nuthall, 85, a resident of Edgewater, MD passed away on April 25, 2024.

Carol was born in Washington, DC to Harold A. and Grace Smith Minnick.  She was raised in Capitol Heights, MD and was a member of the 1956 graduating class of Suitland High School.  That same year, Carol married Melvin Nuthall and began a 40-year career with the Internal Revenue Service, working in various areas of Human Resources. The last 12 years of her IRS career were some of Carol’s favorite and most fulfilling, reporting directly to the Commissioner most of that time, and supporting over 200 executives.  She received four Commissioner’s Awards from four different Commissioners, each one recognizing Carol for going way beyond the expected level of service.  After her retirement in 1996, Carol stayed involved in the Association of Former Internal Revenue Executives (AFIRE) and was key in coordinating their annual conferences.  She maintained many close IRS friendships decades after her retirement.

It didn’t take Carol long to realize retired life was not for her.  In 1997, while running an errand in Edgewater, she saw vans unloading furniture at a funeral home that was preparing to open.  She walked in, introduced herself, asked if they were looking for help and, the next day, began her second career at the current Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, one that lasted more than 20 years.  During that time, Carol was the Edgewater location’s unofficial hostess, welcoming everyone who walked in the front door with her infectious smile and offering a shoulder and a hug to all those who needed it.  She also trained new support staff, providing encouragement and inspiration both as a mentor and a friend.

Carol was a dedicated, lifelong member of the First Christian Church in Upper Marlboro, MD where she served in many different positions. Along with her brother-in-law, David and sister, Peggy, she was key to relocating her childhood Church and founding the new building in 1972. She was an avid volunteer in the nursery and enjoyed educating children on the Word of God. 

Carol was passionate about providing and caring for her family. She was devoted to helping people and her community; dropping off meals for the sick, running errands for the homebound, visiting nursing homes and assisted living facilities or doing whatever she could to make life easier for others. She shared an unyielding faith in God, unconditional love, compassion, compelling character, strength, and an unending generosity. Most of all, she was adored by children as evidenced by the countless Grandparent/Special Friend Days she was invited to share. Witnessing the excitement in a child’s eye upon seeing Carol or getting one of her hugs was truly a special moment. Carol will be forever missed and remembered by the many lives she touched. 

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Grace; her husband, Melvin in 1995; her grandson, Justin in 1998 and her daughter, Sheryl Brittingham Sultz in 2006.  She is survived by her sister and best friend, Peggy Boggs and her husband, David; her son, Denny Nuthall, his wife, Jamie (née Brewster) and their children, Adam, Skylar and Colby; her pseudo-daughter (niece), Hunter Boggs Messineo, her husband, Chris and their daughter, Charlie; her granddaughter, Jennifer Usher and her children, Madeline, Gavin, Garrett and Quinn; and her grandson, Michael Brittingham and his wife, Trista (King). 

The family would like to extend their sincerest thanks to the staff at Brightview Edgewater who cared for Carol as one of their own family members and to Hospice of the Chesapeake for their support.

Friends are invited to celebrate Carol's life on Wednesday, May 1, from 10 am until her funeral service begins at noon at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. Interment Lakemont Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Davidsonville, MD.
