Howard G. Rogers, 91, passed on Tuesday, July 21 at his home in Annapolis, MD. Born on April 29, 1935 in Galesville, MD to the late Clarence and Grace Rogers, Howard is survived by his beloved wife, Sandra C. Rogers; his children, Melinda (Scott) Posey, Anthony (Sheila) Rogers and Kelli Tyler; his grandchildren, Jennifer, Jacquelyn, Jessica, Jamie, Laura, Christina and Nicholas and his great-grandchildren, Tristan, Justin and Paige Elizabeth. On Sunday, July 19, 2026, Pamela “Pam” Thomas passed away peacefully at the age of 71 at her home in Tracy’s Landing, Maryland. Pamela Joyce (Jones) Thomas was born on November 27, 1954, in Pine Valley, New York, and moved with her family to Alexandria, VA, in 1959. Pam attended Rose Hill Elementary, Mark Twain Middle, and Thomas Edison High School, where she graduated in 1973. Her sons, Josh and Ian, both attended those same schools many years later.

On October 20, 1973, she married the love of her life, Gary, in Alexandria, VA, where they lived until moving to their retirement home in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, in 2012. While living in Northern VA, Pam worked in several occupations, including school bus driver, school cafeteria worker, church secretary at Virginia Hills Baptist Church, and finally as an executive assistant at a defense company, where she spent 22 years before retiring.

A lifelong devout Christian, Pam was an active member of Virginia Hills Baptist Church; Colington United Methodist Church in Kill Devil Hills, where she loved to sing in the choir; and, most recently, Friendship Community Baptist Church in Dunkirk, MD. Music was one of the great joys of her life — she had a particular fondness for live shows and would go to concerts with friends and family right up until her final months. She also treasured the beach, and later in life discovered sewing and quilting. After moving to the Outer Banks, Pam expanded her creative talents into weaving rugs and tapestries on the loom at Endless Possibilities, a nonprofit supporting the local community. Her masterfully crafted quilts will live on as cherished gifts to all who received one.

In November 2020, Pam and Gary moved to Maryland to be closer to family, settling in Tracy’s Landing.

Pam was preceded in death by her father, Russell Jones; her mother, Maxine Jones; and her husband of 49 years, Gary. She is survived by her two sons, Josh (Stefani) and Ian (Christy); her brother, Rick; and her sister, Pat. She also left behind two grandchildren, Benjamin Witol and Madison Meeks, and a great-granddaughter, Vivian, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Pam will be forever remembered for her cheerful demeanor, sense of humor, endless patience and kindness, unwavering resilience, and, most importantly, her boundless love for her family and friends.

A Celebration of Life gathering is planned for Pam in the fall of 2026, details will be shared at a later date. In place of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Friendship Community Baptist Church Building/Construction Fund — online at www.fcbc.church, or by check made payable to Friendship Community Baptist Church with “Building/Construction Fund” noted in the memo line, mailed to 37 Jewell Road, Dunkirk, MD 20754.

Sue Jahn Shaffer Tihansky passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 17, 2026 in Edgewater, Maryland. She was surrounded by love and her incredibly dedicated community of caregivers. Her spirit and energy continue to swirl and move among us. She will be forever in our hearts and minds.

Sue was an extraordinary woman. Born May 29, 1931 in New Philadelphia, Ohio, to Clyde Wallace Shaffer and Helen Catharine Johns, Sue lived life to the fullest, and brought fierce determination, creativity and persistence to all aspects of her life. She was dedicated to truth and goodness and finding success, no matter the venture. She was never afraid to take on big, new or complicated tasks. If it doesn’t work the first time, we will try, try again! She was a true force who would be your strongest ally when you needed it.

Sue demanded excellence from herself as well as those around her. She firmly believed that anything is possible if you keep at it, and she would remind you that a winner is a loser who tries one more time. She was always ready to help celebrate your accomplishment no matter how big or how small. She would gladly share the celebratory bubbly, but not the tiramisu, so make sure there is enough to go around!

Sue wanted to make everything around her better. She was a big thinker, dedicated to learning, improving and helping others do the same. She readily shared her ideas, observations and thoughts in sketches and notes and had a special knack for delivering sharp zinging comments that could be brutally honest yet incredibly helpful for those willing to accept them. When Sue was involved, life was more beautiful, more vibrant and more memorable. It also included lots of butter, dark chocolate, whipped cream or even a hot fudge sundae.

When they were in their early teens, Sue and younger sister Ann Shaffer Koenig moved with their parents from Ohio to Coral Gables, Florida. They immersed themselves in their new tropical environment, trading the giant showy peonies of the Midwest for exotic cattleya orchids and fragrant gardenias. The family eventually settled in Tampa where Sue attended Plant High School, and then earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Tampa.

Sue married Basil “Hank” Daniel Tihansky in Tampa, Florida on October 10, 1959. They had three children—Ann, Jahn and Miles—and raised them in a creative environment. Their home was a lifetime project of shared artistic collaboration. Over the years, as the house was remodeled, renovated and decorated, it was a learning laboratory, and an evolving gallery that showcased the combined artistry, skills, craftsmanship and creative expressions of Sue and Hank. They were ‘do it yourselfers’ fueled by Sue’s ideas and executed by Hank’s craftsmanship. Sue had an incredible eye for home decoration and fashion and the house was her stylish showroom. If Sue could dream it, Hank could design and build it. Their children learned right along with them. As parents, they taught and encouraged each of their children to try and learn how things work using different tools and artistic media to express themselves. Sue and Hank were unconventional and open to trying new things. During those years, Hank built a rock wall along the east side of the house and created an indoor waterfall that trickled down the rocks into a pond in the living room; they carved ‘Happy Mother’s Day’ into the freshly poured cement for the new marble windowsills, and somehow the new tile floors were finished just in time for Christmas. The family celebrated these accomplishments together, enriched by the experiences. As time moved on, Sue continued to polish and refine both the interior and exterior of the home, filling it with treasures she created or collected from around the world. 

For Sue, art and creative artistic expression were central. Sue earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Tampa and worked toward her Master of Fine Arts at the University of South Florida (USF). She studied with artist Bill Pachner in Clearwater, FL. Bill encouraged her to develop her own style and expression through oil painting. She was extremely grateful for his nurturing guidance and maintained her relation with him and her fellow Studio 1212 painters for many years. 

She began her early advertising career as a layout artist at the Jordan Marsh department store in Coral Gables, FL. She grew her skills in layout, illustrating, copywriting, typeface and design as she continued working at department stores Robinson’s, Maas Brothers, and ultimately at Jacobson’s where she was the Creative Director. Throughout her career she conceived and managed advertising campaigns that promoted Florida fashion and lifestyle while incorporating local history, information about nature, geography and landmarks that taught readers more about Florida and its unique treasures. She was also dedicated to creating socially responsible messaging that improved the communities she served. 

Sue and Hank exhibited their artworks together at many art shows during the 1960’s and 70’s including the Gasparilla Sidewalk Art Show, the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival and the Cedar Key Art Festival, where in 1967, Sue won First Prize for her painting titled, ‘American Girl.’  Later in life she took a beginner class in watercolor painting through the USF Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). She quickly mastered the medium, converted her living room into a studio and began teaching others. She continued to study, enrolling in many classes and workshops. In the early 2000’s she won several prizes for her paintings at the annual Strawberry Festival in Plant City, FL. Later, she participated in a watercolor workshop in the Tuscany region of Italy with artist Thomas Schaller. She remembered this as a life changing experience she wishes she had done sooner. 

She used her skills in layout, design and messaging throughout her life, volunteering to support many organizations she believed in; including her collaborative painting Studio 1212, OLLI, Hillsborough County Commissioner Jan Platt’s political campaign, Burgert Brothers Historical Photo Calendar, the Hillsborough County Friends of the Library, the Davis Island Yacht Club, Florida Bibliophile Society, the Fellowship of American Bibliophilic Societies, and the University of Tampa.

Many years after Hank’s death in 1984, she had the good fortune to meet John “Jack” Patrick Walsh at OLLI. They became a remarkable couple that shared many interests ranging from the arts, science, politics, geography and history. For more than 15 years, they were actively involved together with OLLI, both of them volunteering, attending and teaching as they made many wonderful friends together. Sue and Jack traveled extensively with Jack supporting Sue’s creative activities. He was a fabulous cook and he helped Sue share the beauty of her home and host many wonderful holidays with family and friends. 

Sue was a lover of books from her earliest years. She started collecting children’s books and then expanded her collection interests to include antiquarian maps and books about Florida history and the natural environment. Preserving Florida’s unique natural resources was always important to her and her collection reflects how dedicated she was to this issue. She joined the Fellowship of the American Bibliophilic Societies or FABS where she participated in their annual tours and became very active with the Florida Bibliophile Society (FBS), creating their newsletter for many years. This challenged her to combine all her skills and passions related to books, art, layout and sharing ideas into one creative outlet. It also connected her to many members and leaders across this community. She was very proud of each issue.

Sue believed strongly in the press (her father had been a newspaper man) and the responsibility of the media and the importance of getting involved, showing up for what you believe in and sticking up for your ideas. She dreamed of owning a newspaper, so she could share her ideas widely. If she owned a restaurant, it would be the kind where you eat what the chef prepares! 

In her last years, her eyesight diminished and she was unable to pursue her areas of great passion, but she continued to listen to audiobooks, attended the Bibliophile Society meetings, kept up with political affairs and stayed engaged with issues that mattered most, especially her children. 

Sue was immensely proud of her three children and her one grandchild. She took interest in all that they did, always encouraging them to shoot higher, try harder and keep at it.  
Sue was predeceased by her parents, Clyde Wallace Shaffer and Helen Catharine Johns; her sister, Ann Shaffer Koenig; her husband, Basil “Hank” Daniel Tihansky, and her partner John “Jack” Patrick Walsh.

Sue is survived by her devoted children, Ann Bavolack Tihansky (partner David Arthur Easter) of Annapolis, MD, Jahn Shaffer Tihansky (wife Patricia Roberta Towne Tihansky) of West River, MD, and Miles Basil Tihansky (wife Kimberly Dale McNeill) of Peyton, CO; as well as her granddaughter, Anastasia August Arango of Tampa, FL.

The family plans to hold a Memorial Art Show and Celebration of Life in her Tampa home at a later date. In lieu of flowers or cards, please get involved in issues you care about, write a letter to the editor, support your local library and bookseller. Support the arts in any way that you can. Take a class, sponsor a student, donate art supplies, help prevent blindness, support Hospice. Above all, do your best, keep learning and express yourself.

Heriot Elizabeth Bradshaw Miller, affectionally known as “Dee Dee,” went into the Lord’s care on Thursday, July 16th at Baltimore Washington Hospital. She was born on January 18th, 1944 in Hamlet, North Carolina, a small town of close knit friends and family.  During her high school years, she was a member of the basketball team, the glee club, and the marching band.  She graduated from Hamlet High School in 1962.  After graduation, she married Edward Butler and had three children, Jim, Shawn, and Noël. Dee Dee was a jack of all trades.  When she returned to Hamlet, she worked at the public library where she ran the Book Mobile, bringing the library to residents all over Richmond County.  She later worked as a veterinary technician and then went to work for the Rockingham police department as a dispatcher. During her tenure there, she was inspired to become a police officer.  After graduating from police school, she joined the Anson County Sheriff’s Department and then went on to work as a correctional officer for the North Carolina Department of Corrections.  Dee Dee lived in North Carolina for 79 years.  In 2023, she moved to Arnold, Maryland to live with her daughter and grandchildren. Dee Dee was a member of Ss. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Annapolis and enjoyed knitting, crochet, bird watching, music, reading and the outdoors with her grandchildren. She is proceeded in death by her parents Earl and Betsy Bradshaw and her husband of 26 years Dave Miller. She is survived by her sister, Pat Maloney of Hamlet, North Carolina, her three children, Jim and his wife, Debbie, of Rockingham, North Carolina, Shawn and his wife, Jessica, of Raeford, North Carolina and her daughter Noël Butler of Arnold, Maryland. She had 10 grandchildren: Ryan, Drew, Katherine, Patrick, Hali, Jacob, Edward, Hobson, Harriett, and Frankie, and her three great-grandchildren: Clarissa, Eleanor, and Evelyn.  Funeral services will be on Monday, July 20th at 11:00 AM, at Ss. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Annapolis, Maryland.  Dee Dee was a huge supporter of our Military and its Veterans. Roberta “Bobbie” Jane Grace, 85, of Annapolis, Maryland, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2026, in the presence of family and friends. Born on September 17, 1941 in Baltimore, Maryland, Bobbie was the cherished daughter of Robert and Madeline Grace. 

Bobbie graduated from Saint Agnes Hospital School of Nursing in Baltimore and shortly thereafter joined the United States Navy Nurse Corps. Following basic training, she began her Navy career in 1964 as an Ensign at the Naval Hospital in Saint Albans, New York. She went on to serve nine tours of duty throughout the United States and one tour aboard the Naval Hospital Ship USS Repose off the coast of Vietnam. Of all her assignments, she treasured her time aboard the USS Repose as one of the most meaningful experiences of her life.

Throughout her distinguished career, Bobbie earned the respect and admiration of those who served alongside her. She was known as an exceptionally competent and compassionate nurse, a dedicated Naval Officer, and an inspiring leader in the Nurse Corps. She rose to the rank of Captain in 1987 and completed two additional assignments, the last at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, before retiring in June 1991.

Bobbie's life was defined by service. Whether caring for wounded service members, supporting her church and community, helping family and friends, or ministering to patients with extraordinary compassion, she quietly devoted herself to others. She possessed a servant's heart, giving generously of her time and talents. Her kindness was thoughtful and intentional, and every gift she gave reflected how deeply she knew and cared for the people in her life.

A lifelong learner, Bobbie was an avid reader with an extraordinary personal library. Her shelves held everything from classic literature and theology to history, biographies, and military accounts. Rarely was a book left untouched—its pages filled with highlighted passages, folded corners, and handwritten notes that reflected her thoughtful mind, intellectual curiosity, and deep faith.

Bobbie was a devout Christian and active member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Annapolis. She faithfully served in many areas of the church, and because of her lifelong love of music, became a valued member of the choir for many years. She found great joy in worship, treasured the music of the church, and formed lasting friendships within her church family.

She was also an accomplished photographer and rarely arrived anywhere without a camera in hand, eager to preserve the moments that mattered. Her photographs captured family celebrations, Navy friendships, vacations, and everyday memories, many of which continue to adorn the homes of those she loved.

Following retirement, Bobbie developed a special affection for Virginia's Northern Neck, where her extended family gathered throughout the year. Cracking crabs on the Fourth of July became one of her favorite traditions, and she delighted in clearing the kitchen so she could prepare her famous crab imperial. Every Thanksgiving, family members looked forward to receiving a year's supply of her homemade chutney, and she never arrived without Navy memorabilia to share. Her visits were eagerly anticipated, and everyone smiled when "the Captain" pulled into the driveway.

Bobbie is survived by her cousins, Donna Owen of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Rob Grace of Kilmarnock, Virginia, and Paul Pugh of Marlton, New Jersey, as well as many beloved family members and dear friends whose lives were enriched by her love and generosity.

Roberta "Bobbie" Grace lived with unwavering faith, quiet strength, and a deep commitment to serving others. Her legacy of service, compassion, faith, and love will be remembered by all who knew her.

A memorial service celebrating Bobbie's life is currently being planned. Please check back for updates.

Lloyd Daniel “Danny” Brown, 88, a resident of West River, MD for over 50 years, and previously of Washington, DC, died on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at his home.
Born on November 8, 1937, in Dover, NH, Danny was the son of the late Lloyd T. Brown and Marie Rose Tucker. He graduated from Dover High School in Dover, NH.
Danny served in the U.S. Army as a Chaplain’s Assistant for three years, stationed at Fort Meade. He later worked for the American Gas Association for 23 years as Director of Meeting Planning and later sold antiques.
Danny was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Davidsonville, the Elks, and the Owensville Civic Association. He enjoyed gardening, reading, and needlepoint.
In addition to his parents, Danny was preceded in death by his spouse, F. Rawson Carter, Jr., and his sister, Mary T. Ewing.
Mass of Resurrection will be offered on Friday, July 24 at 11am at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 W. Central Avenue, Davidsonville, MD 21035. Interment will be held at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery in Lothian, MD at 2 pm.
