S

ophia Christopoulos, 87, a long time resident of Crofton, Maryland and previously of Washington, DC, died peacefully in her sleep on the morning of May 5, 2024. Sophia had bravely battled Parkinson’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia for the past several years. Sophia was born July 25, 1936 in Sparta Greece, later immigrating to the United States where in 1958 she married the love of her life, Christos Christopoulos, in Washington, DC. Sophia and Christos later moved to Maryland where they raised their five children. As a couple they worked side-by-side all their life, owning and operating a restaurant, liquor store and commercial properties. Sophia was a lifelong member of Ss. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Annapolis, Maryland and recently was recognized as a 50 year member of the Agia Anna Philoptochos Society. Sophia and Christos loved to travel with friends and family, and enjoyed splitting their time between Ocean City, MD and Jupiter, FL. Sophia’s most treasured moments were spent with her family, especially with her ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Sophia was preceded in death by her husband, Christos Christopoulos. She is survived by her children, Joann (Joe) Steranka of Jupiter, FL, Madia (Donnie) Toll of Annapolis, MD, John (Ellen) Christopoulos of Arnold, MD, Angela (Tommy) Reins of Knoxville, TN and Nick (Desiree) Christopoulos of Baltimore, MD; her brother, Elias (Dina) Konstantopoulos of Glen Burnie, MD; her ten grandchildren; Alexandra (Teddy) Trestik, Christopher (Kim) Toll, Stephen Steranka, Jonathan and Michael Toll, Christos (Arnold) Christopoulos, Lexie Reins, Christos (Baltimore) Christopoulos, Chloe and Sophia Christopoulos, and her three great grandchildren, Ryan Toll, Tatum Trestik, and Cameron Toll and many beloved nieces and nephews. Friends and family are invited to celebrate Sophia's life at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD on Thursday, May 9 from 4 to 8 pm. Funeral service will be held at Ss. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 2747 Riva Rd., Annapolis, MD on Friday, May 10 at 11 am. Interment will follow at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Cemetery in Annapolis. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation (parkinson.org) or the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org). Condolences may be made by using the Memories link on this page.
