David G. Whitworth, Jr. - Obituary

D

avid Gregg Whitworth, Jr., age 78, passed away at his home in Edgewater, MD, on Tuesday, April 16, 2024. David was born in Cumberland, MD, on September 3, 1945. He was predeceased by his parents, David G. Whitworth, Sr., and Florence Repp Whitworth. David is survived by his son, Gregg B. Whitworth, PhD.; his daughter, Kara M. Whitworth; grandchildren, Faye L. Schroeder and Maya R. Epstein; his sister, Molly R. Whitworth, PhD.; his brother, Horace P. Whitworth, II and wife Terry; his very best friend and mate, Nancy S. Reed, as well as, beloved nieces, and nephew, and cousins. Growing up in LaVale, MD, Whitworth was a member of the Allegany High School Class of 1963. He was granted a B.A. at the University of Maryland in 1968. Whitworth promoted his philosophy of equality and diversity through the position of Admissions Counselor and later Director of Admissions at Prince Georges Community College by recruiting students who more fully represented the county population. Mr. Whitworth earned the degree of Juris Doctor in 1975 at the University of Baltimore Law School. He was admitted to the Bar in Maryland and the District of Columbia. Although he litigated a wide variety of cases, lawyer professional disciplinary cases became his expertise. Whitworth also served as an expert witness in disciplinary cases. As a litigator he was a fierce advocate for his clients. Mr. Whitworth took pride in the law profession and was respected by colleagues. His inspiration came from his grandfather, Horace P. Whitworth, Sr., and uncle, Horace P. Whitworth, Jr., who were noted attorneys in Western Maryland. David treasured family, friends, history, the law, model railroading, and life on the water. After retiring, he and Nancy completed America’s Great Loop boating over 10,000 miles for 18 months in the vessel “Decisions”. Family and friends shared parts of the experience. Family and friends are invited to celebrate David's life on Monday, May 6 from 5 to 7 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD. A gathering is also planned for Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Fratelli’s, 359 National Highway, LaVale, MD, from 1 to 3 P.M.
