Whitney “Whit” Seymour Slater, 86, a 30-year resident of Annapolis, MD, and previously of Arlington, VA, died on Monday, March 30, 2020, at his home following a five year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born July 8, 1933, in Cleveland, OH, he graduated from Lakewood High School in Lakewood, OH in 1950, Oberlin College in Oberlin, OH in 1954, and Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in 1956. Whit was employed as a Budget Officer at the Naval Research Laboratory from 1957-70 and as a Program Manager at the National Science Foundation from 1971 until his retirement in 1994. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Courtenay Murphy Slater. Whit is survived by three sons, Charles S. Slater of Mountain View, CA, Harold B. Slater of Arlington, VA, and W. Ruffin Slater of Raleigh, NC; a sister, Sally Helgeson of Madison, WI; and four grandchildren, Thomas Slater of San Diego, CA, Anne Slater of Arlington, VA, Heidi Slater of San Francisco, CA, and Kate Slater of Arlington, VA.
