Obituary for Mary A. Hagenbach

Mary Antoinette Hagenbach, age 97, of Davidsonville, Maryland died on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 after complications from being pushed on October 30, 2020 and requiring surgery for a fractured hip on October 31, 2020.

Mary was born on November 18, 1923 in Landsdale, Pennsylvania to Constantino and Pauline Zappallo Carullo, the youngest of three daughters (Amelia, Angelina and Mary). During her High School years, she was a Majorette performing with the School Band. She graduated from The Regional High School, Penns Grove, New Jersey in 1942. Mary was awarded the honor of having one of the highest grades in the study of the Italian Language by the Order of the Sons of Italy.

Mary and James Pelura, Jr. were married on February 2, 1944 and they had five children, Carol McFarlan McGrellis, who passed away due to complications of Breast Cancer in 1994, James Pelura III (Marianne), Davidsonville, Maryland, Infant Denise passed away at 15 days old in 1951, Timothy Pelura (Donna), Malvern, Pennsylvania, and Robert Pelura, Mountville, Pennsylvania.

Mary was always busy with her children’s activities and was a fantastic cook! Many times, she could be found helping out in her husband, Jim’s Insurance Company’s office in Penns Grove. Mary and Jim divorced in February 1975 and Mary married Robert Hagenbach in December 1976. They were divorced in October 1984.

She adored her eight grandchildren and her twelve great grandchildren. Mary was always very fond of dogs, horses, going to and watching football games. She was always physically active walking and working in her beautiful garden!

Mary worked at Strawbridge & Clothier in Delaware beginning in 1984 and as the company name changed to Hecht’s and then to Macy’s, she continued working there until her retirement on her 88th Birthday, November 18, 2011.

Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes any memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of Maryland, the Downs Syndrome Association of Delaware or a charity of one's choice.
