William Joseph Hufnell

June 1, 1929 - September 15, 2012

On Saturday, September 15,2012, William Joseph Hufnell, 83, of Edgewater, MD passed away peacefully.

William was the loving husband of Mary Margaret Hufnell, to whom he was married for 61 years; he was the devoted father of Mary Hufnell of Bethesda, Anne Hufnell of Chester, William Hufnell of Annapolis and Gerald Hufnell of Davidsonville, MD and grandfather of Jake and Zach Malanoski, Kaitlyn and Ryan Hufnell, Billy and Lisa Hufnell, and Ashley Hufnell. He was predeceased by his son, Joseph Hufnell.

William is also survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Murray of Royersford, PA and Edith Greene of Milford, MA, his sister-in-law Sr. Maureen Patrick Kelly of St. John the Evangelist Church in Severna Park, and his cousin, James Penston of Glendale, CA, whom he considered a brother.

Mr. Hufnell served in the Army during the Korean War and also served in the US Navy for 3 years.

He was born and raised in Philadelphia. He graduated from Villanova University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He worked in labor relations for most of his career for the Pennsylvania Railroad then the Penn Central Railroad, and for the United States Department of Transportation.

He loved spending time with his family, particularly telling corny jokes to his grandchildren. He was also an avid runner and participated in a number of 10k and 5k races, sometimes running with his family, including his grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 20, at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomon's Island Road in Edgewater, MD from 2:00 to 4:00 and from 6:00 to 8:00pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, September 21 at 11:00 AM, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Edgewater. Interment will follow at Maryland Veteran's Cemetery in Crownsville.
