Life Legacy


Robert "Pap" Merrell Dunlap, 82, a 25-year resident of Harwood, MD and previously of Edgewater, MD and Pittsburgh, PA died on April 26, 2012 at his home of pancreatic cancer after a 3 month illness.
Born November 28, 1929 in Pittsburgh, PA, he graduated from Brentwood High School in 1947 and attended the University of Pittsburgh prior to enlisting in the United States Air Force. In both high school and in the Air Force, Robert was a member of the track team; specializing in Pole Vaulting and helped lead Brentwood High School to the state championship. Robert was honorably discharged from the Air Force with a rank of Staff Sergeant on October 1, 1952. He worked for Brentwood Reality, in Pittsburgh, PA, selling real estate before starting his own construction business, Dunlap Homes, Inc. Robert built approximately 225 residential homes in the greater Annapolis area-specializing in Deck Houses. He then created a builder consulting business; where he advised and assisted new builders in over 100 different Deck Houses across the United States, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas. Robert was awarded the Deck House Builder of the Year award and held the Maryland State record for the largest giant pumpkin. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan and enjoyed building remote controlled model airplanes, watching High School sports teams and was a successful gardener who always shared the fruits of his labors with many.
He was predeceased by his parents, Merrell and Emma Dunlap; a brother, Russell Dunlap; and a sister, Dolores Krah.
Robert is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley Dunlap; a son, Thomas Dunlap and his wife, Nancy of Galesville, MD; two daughters, Bobbi Sundquist and her husband, Michael of Harwood, MD and Tracey Pasqualini and her husband, Peter of Pasadena, MD; and two grandchildren, Cody Dunlap of Annapolis, MD and Kelci Sundquist of Harwood, MD.
Friends are invited to Robert's Life Celebration at the George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD on Saturday, May 5 from 4 to 7pm. Interment private.
