Life Legacy

On December 30, 2012, Denney J. Keys, age 54, beloved husband of Mary Ellen "Mimi" Keys, died following a year-long battle with cancer.

Mr. Keys was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and was raised in Cinnaminson, New Jersey. He graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1980, where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He received his Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1986, also at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Mr. Keys proudly served as an employee of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for more than 20 years. He joined NASA in 1990 as a Power Systems Engineer at the Goddard Space Flight Center. Since 2007, Mr. Keys has served NASA as a Senior Technical Fellow for Power Engineering with the NASA Engineering Space Center. During his tenure with NASA, Mr. Keys was the recipient of numerous awards including the NASA Medal for Exceptional Service in 2005 and the NASA Exceptional Engineering Achievement Medal in 2011.

He is predeceased by his father, Don D. Keys, who passed away in 1995.

In addition to his wife Mimi, he is survived by his mother Helen M. (Jensen) Keys of Cinnaminson, New Jersey; two sisters, Janice P. Keys of Halethorpe, Maryland and Susan L. Duffield of Berlin, New Jersey; two brothers, Glenn H. Keys of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Kevin L. Keys of Somerdale, New Jersey; and 15 nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Denney's life will be held at the Walden Country Club, 1500 Riedel Rd., Crofton, MD, on Sunday January 6, 2013, at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 445 Defense Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401. Online guestbook available at
