It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Francis Jones on October 31, 2025, at the age of 54. Born in 1971 in Seoul, South Korea, John was a beloved son to Min Cha and the late Roosevelt Jones.

Growing up in Newport News, Virginia, John excelled at Denbigh High School, where he was an active football player and participated in international science fairs. His commitment to service led him to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. After graduation he proudly served in the United States Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer for 7 years, achieving the rank of Lieutenant.

After his military service, John earned his MBA at the University of Maryland and dedicated over 25 years to his career at IBM, where he made lasting contributions in the field of Cloud Security and Leadership Development. 

In April 2001, John married the love of his life, Monica Brown, celebrating a beautiful union that lasted over 24 years. Their marriage was a model of love and commitment, serving as an inspiring example for others they mentored others through Marriage Ministries. John's deep adoration for Monica was evident in their partnership; he was her best friend, her unwavering support, and her everything. 

He cherished the holiness of family and embraced his role as a devoted father to their beloved daughter, Abigail, who is now 17. John consistently demonstrated his dedication by being present for Abigail, supporting in every endeavor, and guiding her though life. He volunteered alongside her and played an active role in shaping her into the remarkable young woman she is today. John's encouragement instilled in Abigail the importance of following her dreams, fulfilling her commitments, and maintaining discipline in all her actions.  

A man of deep faith, John was actively involved as the Vice President of the St. Mary’s Pastoral Council and lectured regularly at liturgical masses. Welcoming others into the Catholic faith was a cherished mission for John, as he dedicated life and heart to ministering to those seeking spiritual guidance. 

John maintained strong connections with the Naval Academy.  He served as a sponsor parent for Midshipmen, fostering mentorship and support for those in their formative years. He was an active member of the North Carolina and Annapolis Maryland Alumni Chapters. He also served as a Blue and Gold officer, assisting in the recruitment of future Midshipmen, and shared a special brotherhood with the 33rd Company and the 7th Battalion of Naval Academy graduates, nurturing lifelong friendships along the way.
 
Additionally, John was an auxiliary member of the Capital City and Arundel Bay chapters of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. His passion for service extended to various community organizations, where he volunteered with Interfaith Hospitality and Habitat for Humanity, demonstrating his commitment to helping those in need. 

John was a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan, bringing joy to family gatherings with his enthusiasm for "God’s team".

John is survived by his wife, Monica; his daughter, Abigail; his mother, Min Cha; and his brothers Roosevelt Jr. (Connie), Cary (Julia), Robert (Karen), and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends. He is preceded in death by his father, Roosevelt Sr.; his son, Augustine; his niece Charlie Jones; and his wife’s parents, Dr. Frederick Douglas Brown and Joyce Brown.

As we remember John, we celebrate a man whose kindness and dedication touched the lives of many. His spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, November 7 at 9:00 am at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 N Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD 21401.

William (Will) Hardesty, 97, a long-time resident of Riva, died at his residence on Hardesty Creek, on October 27, after a prolonged illness.

Mr. Hardesty was born on August 24, 1928, in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, at the family homestead on Muddy Creek Road.  After completing high school, he enlisted in the Navy in January 1946.  He served most of his tour of duty as a Sonar Man in the Pacific Ocean and was discharged from the US Navy Receiving Station in Boston, MA, in December 1947.  Upon his discharge, he returned to Riva where he met and married the love of his life, Patricia (Pat) Frantom.

Will worked for several years as a Union carpenter before forming Hardesty Brothers Builders in 1959.  He and his brother Charles (Charlie) left their imprint on Annapolis and surrounding areas by specializing in building custom homes.  Their biggest venture was Hardesty Estates in Davidsonville.  He retired at the age of 51 and he and his wife spent many years traveling the country in their motor home.

Aside from carpentry, Will loved boating, fishing, golfing, waterskiing, horse racing, playing cards and traveling in his RV’s.  He also loved having crab feasts and BBQ’s at his home to celebrate holidays and special events with his family.

Will was preceded in death by his wife (Pat Hardesty), daughter (Patsy Ann Lockett), father (Hunter William Hardesty), mother (Helen Mae Hardesty), and sister (Shirley Mae Hardesty).  He is survived by one son (Glenn Hardesty of Davidsonville, MD), two daughters (Brenda Evans Johnson of Loudon, TN, and Amy Hardesty of Edgewater, MD), one son-in-law (Bruce Johnson of Loudon, TN), three grandsons (Hunter Hardesty, Bret Click and Russell Lockett) and one brother (Charlie Hardesty of Davidsonville, MD).

A private service will be held.  The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, Post Office Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675



Joan Sharman, aged 80, passed away peacefully at home on October 27th, 2025, after a long illness with Alzheimer’s.  She was born in Baltimore, Maryland on June 12, 1945, to Mary and Charles Ottey.  Joan cherished her role as a doting wife, mother, and grandmother.  Nothing made her happier than to be surrounded by family, especially at Christmastime.  She had the voice of an angel, and we will forever miss her singing “Oh Holy Night” every Christmas eve. Joan was a talented home cook who was famous for her lasagna and Maryland crab cakes.  Amazingly, even as her Alzheimer’s progressed, she could still beat anyone at cards or Sequence.  Throughout her life, she was caring, kind, and generous in helping anyone in need. 

She is survived by her daughters Ronda Sharman and Kimberly (Brian) Evans, her grandson Nathan Evans, her sister Beverly Sharman, and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband Alan Sharman, her sister Shirley Ottey, her brother Ronald Ottey, and her parents Mary and Charles Ottey.  The family is grateful for the loving care and unwavering support of her long-time care givers, Deanna and Mandy.

Carl Hassel Gross of Lothian, Maryland passed away peacefully on October 27, 2025 surrounded by family and friends. Carl was born on December 26, 1939 in Russell County, Virginia to Nania (nee Sharp) and Ruie Gross. At just 17 years old, he came to Maryland and began working as a carpenter, a trade he mastered over the years. Through determination and skill, he eventually owned his own company and even built his dream home that he lived in and he cared for so proudly.

Carl enjoyed the simple things-time at home, mowing and caring for his property, sharing stories, and being with family. Many days were spent outside with his granddaughter Savannah, cutting grass and taking breaks beneath the shade trees, resting and enjoying the quiet peace of the yard. He loved his many dogs, riding motorcycles, playing pool, and bowling, and he always appreciated a good laugh and good company. Known for his steady presence and strong work ethic, he was a man who led by example. His wisdom and humor will be forever missed.

Carl was preceded in death by the love of his life, Connie Gross, who he was married to for 55 years. For the last eight years of her life, after she became paralyzed and wheelchair-bound, he cared for her at home with dedication and love. He was also preceded in death by his sons, Wade Gross and Carl Welch, as well as his sisters, Evelyn Gross and Myrtle Carr. Though out hearts ache, we should find comfort knowing that they are together again, resting in God’s loving care.

Left to cherish his memory are his son, Richard (Patricia) Welch; his grandson, Richard Welch, Jr.; and his granddaughter, Savannah Gross. He is also survived by his brother, Carter D. (Connie) Gross; his sister, Viola Lester; and his cousin and close friend, Patricia Boyer. In addition, he leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends, all who were blessed to know him. His hands built a home, his heart built a family, and his love will echo through every acre he cherished. Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Carl's life on Saturday, November 1, 2025, from 11 am until his funeral service begins at 12 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomos Island Road, Edgewater, MD 21037. Interment will follow at Lakemont Memorial Gardens, Davidsonville, MD.

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our beloved Charles Varipapa, DDS, cosmetic dentist, bon vivant, Italophile, and master story teller. Charley was loved by his mother, brothers, nephews, nieces and friends. He had an outsized influence on everyone he met: brilliant, funny, exacting, and generous to a fault.

Charley was a connector of people and ideas. He filled every room with laughter, insight, and a touch of theater, always able to bend the moment toward joy or revelation. Whether practicing and mentoring fine dentistry, storytelling over a perfect meal, or offering guidance through life’s rough patches, he did it with warmth, flair, and unrelenting optimism.

A perfectionist with a cowboy’s confidence, Charley shaped dentistry with both artistry and heart. He believed great smiles began with empathy and conversation, and he practiced that belief every day. He built thriving practices in Dunkirk and Old Town Alexandria, each infused with his love for beauty, food, and design. His office felt like a salon, part studio, part trattoria, where patients became friends and friends became family.

Even through years of illness, Charley’s spirit never dimmed. He moved to Chester, Maryland to be near his beloved mother Phyllis, his lifelong teacher and inspiration, and continued to find joy in conversation, cooking, and connection.

Charley’s legacy lives in every life he brightened, every colleague he mentored, and every smile he perfected. There’s a hole in the world that will never quite be filled.

He is survived by his mother, Phyllis Varipapa; his brothers, Robert, Jamie, Richard, and Michael; his nieces and nephews and many, many loving friends.

We all miss you, dear friend.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Charley's life on Sunday, November 2 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home and Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD 21037. The family is planning a Celebration of Life for Charley to be held in December around the time of Charley's birthday on December 11. Details will be added as soon as they become available.

Joseph E. Krupinsky ,85, a resident of Annapolis, MD died on Saturday, October 25 of natural causes. Born on March 12, 1940, in Springfield, VT to the late Walter and Angelina Joan Albano Krupinsky, Joe graduated from Springfield High School in 1958 and went on to attend St. Michael’s College before earning his Accounting Degree from Southeastern University. He began his career as an intern with Nationwide Insurance for two years before joining the Department of Defense, where he proudly served with the U.S. Navy for 38½ years. He also spent a year with the Water Control Division of the Department of the Interior, helping to establish what became the Environmental Protection Agency. On November 28, 1964 he married the love of his life, Eleanor Elizabeth Kennedy. Together, they raised four children and shared 56 years of marriage before Eleanor’s passing on May 31, 2021. Joe enjoyed all kinds of sports and had a real talent for baking. Each Christmas, he made a variety of cookies to share with family and friends, a tradition everyone looked forward to. His homemade stuffing was another favorite, always a highlight at both Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners.

Joe is survived by his children, Colleen Krupinsky, Christine (Tony) Bruno, Kevin (Kelly) and Steven Krupinsky; his four grandchildren, Elisabeth and Nathan Krupinsky and Matthew and Johnathan Bruno and his dear friend, Gail Zimmerman. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday, November 4 at 10:30 am at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 N. Bestgate Rd., Annapolis, MD. Daniel Timothy Graham went to his heavenly home on Saturday, October 25 after a long health battle. He joins his parents (Walter Jr & Katherine) and two of his brothers (David & Samuel). He leaves behind his brother Walter (Noemi), his sister-in-law Joni, and countless nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews, among other loving family and friends. Daniel loved listening and dancing to music, watching sports, and making people laugh. He was generous with what he had through ongoing charitable donations, and he always dreamed of getting rich from a lottery windfall or stock market boom. Daniel was proud of his service and leadership in the Masonic Order and his decades of service to the federal government. He had an impressive knowledge of history and Biblical facts, and he loved the story of the prodigal son. His bravery, resilience, honesty, and humility have inspired many, and his infectious smile will be dearly missed.

The family will receive visitors at Townes Funeral Home in Danville on Wednesday October 29, 2025, from 4:00 until 6:00pm. Further details will follow on services in the Washington, DC area. A visitation will be held at Kalas Funeral Home in Oxon Hill, MD from 10am-12pm on Tuesday November 4th with a graveside service to follow at 1 P.M. at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Carolyn Ciepiela of Annapolis, MD, passed away on October 24, 2025, at age 93. Born in Montreal, Quebec, on October 14, 1932, she began her career as a legal secretary working for the Canadian Foreign Office in Ottawa. In 1957, she accepted an assignment to serve in the Canadian Embassy in Moscow, USSR, where she met her husband, Robert Ciepiela, who was posted at the US Embassy in the Naval Attache’s Office. Thereafter, she lived the life of a Navy spouse, raising three daughters in various postings in the US, the Philippines, and Panama. After Robert retired from the Navy, she was employed by the Panama Canal Company, and when they repatriated to the US in 1980, she worked at several Dallas law firms. She completed a BA in History at the University of Texas, Dallas. They moved to Annapolis in 2003 to reside at Baywoods, where Robert passed away in 2015.

A longtime member of the League of Woman Voters (LWV), Carolyn worked passionately to maintain the integrity of the electoral process. She was instrumental in reviving the Anne Arundel chapter of the League and organized candidates forums for local and state elections – volunteer service for which she recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the LWV. At Baywoods, she was an anchor resident and participated actively in governance by serving several terms as an elected member of the Board advocating for the interests of the resident community.

Carolyn was known as a dear friend to many throughout her life. She gave easily and generously to friends who returned to her their precious gifts of kindness and care.

A memorial event will be held at Baywoods on Tuesday, Oct. 28, from 3:30-5pm in Norair Hall, arranged by her daughters Catherine, Cecilia, and Marie Ciepiela. She also is survived by her grandchildren Jack and Connor Gaughan, and Ava Kaelin; her son-in-law, Andrew Kaelin; and her siblings James Wood and Barbara Wood of Ontario, Canada.

MARJORIE A. (DENTITH) HERMAN  

On Friday, October 24, 2025; beloved wife of the late Richard J. Herman, Sr.; mother of Patricia (Donnie) Applekamp, Nancy (Phil) Rigby, Deborah (Pat) Rigby, Richard (Teresa) Herman, Jr., and Jacquelynne Pate; sister of the late Shirley Donaldson, Jean Ford, Janet Haupt, the late Nancy Smith; and best friend of Nancy Moles. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Paul Albert Parolski, Sr., age 84, on October 23, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on September 22, 1941, in Medford, Massachusetts, Paul was the cherished son of Albert and Mary Grace Parolski. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, cousin, uncle, friend, and neighbor whose warmth and spirit touched all who knew him. 

Paul lived a life defined by integrity, hard work, and compassion. He was deeply dedicated to his career and to those he loved, earning the admiration of colleagues, friends, and family alike. Known for his kindness, humor, and generosity, Paul had a gift for bringing people together and making everyone feel valued. 

Outside of his professional career with the Department of Defense, Paul found great joy working with his “Capital Centre Family”. A lifelong fan of Washington, D.C. sports, he cheered passionately for his hometown teams. His love of family, music, and travel enriched every chapter of his life, and his joyful energy was infectious to all who shared in his adventures. 

Paul proudly served in the National Guard and was called to duty during the 1960s riots in Washington, D.C.—a testament to his lifelong commitment to service and community. 
Paul’s greatest pride was his family. 

He is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Margie L. Parolski; his brother, Richard A. Parolski; and his mother-in-law, Jean Poland. He is also survived by his children, daughter Christine P. Martein and son-in-law Robert Martein; son Paul A. Parolski, Jr.; and daughter Sarah Parolski and son-in-law Paul Happel. His grandchildren brought him immense joy: William A. Treff, Katherine D. Treff, Nicolas Parolski, Isadora Parolski, Paul Charles (Charlie) Happel, Wellington (Wells) Happel, and Henry R. Happel. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Al and Grace, his stepfather, Richard Bowman, his brother, Kenneth F. Parolski, and his father-in-law, Richard Poland. 
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Paul’s life on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at Kalas Funeral Home and Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, MD 21037. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 PM. Interment will take place at Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville, MD.

Yvonne Mary Samuel “…fought the good fight, …finished the race, …kept the faith.” 

Yvonne departed this life Thursday morning, October 23rd, 2025, at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center. Until her transition, she was talking, smiling, and laughing as she enjoyed her 84 years of living life—never letting life live her. 

Born on July 4, 1941, in Washington, D.C., Yvonne was the eldest of seven children born to the late Joseph A. Waters and Flossie M. (Hughes) Shaw. She grew up in Southeast Washington, D.C., and later in Fairmont Heights, Maryland, where she graduated from Fairmont Heights High School. Yvonne went on to have three beloved children: Delphine D. Coleman, William Leroy Moseley Jr., and Michelle Y. Woodley. 

Yvonne had a gift for service and was a natural caregiver. It came as no surprise that she began her noble career by operating an in-home daycare service. From 1971 to 1981, she worked for the Department of Justice (Immigration & Naturalization Service - INS), the National Labor Relations Board, and the D.C. Department of Licenses, Investigations & Inspections. Thereafter, Yvonne earned certification and licensure in Early Childhood Education and operated her own personalized daycare service. 

As an extension of her nurturing spirit, she later obtained certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Through this calling, she cared for countless children and elderly family members. Many reading this may nod in agreement, as she likely helped you or your loved ones at some point in your lives. 

Yvonne loved everyone—especially her family—and was the family historian of sorts. With her keen knowledge of family connections, she believed it was important to stay in touch and visit aunts, cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and uncles as often as she could. At some point, she probably even opened her home to many of them for short stays when they needed a place to go. 

Yvonne was a soldier for Christ and loved the Lord with all her heart. She was truly dedicated to her Catholic faith, having been baptized in the Church and having completed all required sacraments. She was a long-time member of Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Southeast Washington, D.C. As a continuation of her faithful Catholic practice, Yvonne served as a Lay Minister and completed two years of Lay Ministry training at St. Joseph’s Seminary, along with four years in the Education Parish Service Program at Trinity University. 

Yvonne was compassionate, fiery, outspoken, and at times unfiltered. She was always smiling, loved giving, sharing wisdom, and quoting and sharing daily Bible verses. She loved traveling throughout the United States and abroad—especially throughout the Caribbean islands.  

Yvonne was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Joseph Waters Jr. and Gary Waters Sr. 

She leaves to cherish her memory: 

Her three children and their spouses: Delphine D. Coleman, William Leroy Moseley Jr. (Debra M Tunney), and Michelle Y. Woodley (Glenn Woodley Jr.) 

Grandchildren: Shannon D. Tate, Jordan L. Moseley, Isaiah Woodley, Dominique N Buckmon, Chermaine Woodley, Christopher Woodley, and Glenn Woodley III 

Great-grandchildren: Charles Tate, Jahlil Tate, and Paris Tate 

Siblings: Marie Proctor, Magnolia Waters, Tyrone Waters Sr., and Antoinette Porter 

Along with a devoted host of cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, friends, and neighbors
